Kya Clark grew up on her own in the swamp of Barkley Cove in North Carolina, cut off from civilization. To support herself she trades fish and vegetables from her vegetable garden for other food. She feels at home there, considers nature her school. But when she comes into contact with two young men from the city, she discovers that there is another world out there. When one of them is found dead, suspicion immediately falls on Kya.
